5 out of 5 stars Excellent and a must-have for a home office   May 9, 2010
Scott FS (Sacramento, CA United States)
Let's face it. The ubiquitous office stapler gets little, if any, respect. It's a utilitarian tool that nevertheless is a necessary office implement. Staples are the best way to semi-permanently attach papers to one another.

You'd think in this 'paperless' office of the future, we would have little need for a stapler. Not so! We use more paper now than ever before, not in small part because of the ready availability of home printers and copiers. The humble stapler is thus squeezed and squeezed, and hit and punched and pushed and slammed all too often, even at home. It serves its purpose, if it is well-made and can stand a lot of abuse (I've been known to use my old school Swingline stapler to smash nuts, pound a nail into the wall, and as a paperweight.

Sometimes the good old stapler just isn't up to the task, if you ask too much of your old friend. Let's say you have a thick stack of papers you need to assemble and keep, or maybe pass around at meetings. The standard stapler isn't going to go through that thick sheaf of paper. You could staple through one side, then the back, and that would sort of hold, until it came apart in the middle. Or, you could break down and buy this Swingline heavy-duty stapler.

I was like you, limping by on that decades-old stapler, perhaps lugging that thick stack of papers to the office, where I could borrow the office heavy-duty stapler. Finally, I broke down and bought this stapler. I'm glad I did, and I know you will be too.

OK, I don't use it as often as I use the other stapler. But, it's a perfect tool when you have that 100 page document you don't want flying all over the place, when you it's a professional-looking document that's called for.

And this stapler performs! It will take several lengths of staples, from a 1/8 inch to a 3/4 inch, the latter being capable of affixing staples to 160 sheets of paper. And that's a lot of paper. Maybe if you're writing the sequel to 'War and Peace' it won't be enough, but for most of us, that's a lot of paper!

I love this stapler! It works when you need it to work, and it does its job with aplomb. It doesn't take a lot of force to use it (surprisingly). If you have a lot of paper (maybe that 160 page autobiography), just use gravity to help get through that much.

Highly recommended. No home office should be without one!

2 out of 5 stars Beware - it is very difficult to remove unused staple strips.   November 20, 2009

This stapler is great if you only plan to use one size of staple.

If you plan on switching staples frequently, like I do, then it is more of a curse than a blessing.

It turns out that once you put a strip of staples into the machine, there is no way of getting them out (as the opening in the front is not large enough to pull them through and it is impossible to push them out the back). So if you need to change staple sizes, what do you do?

I emailed Swingline and asked them if there was a mechanism for getting unused staples out of the stapler. Here's their response: "Well, You can try taking the back follow block out and tilting the staples in an angle to see if they fall out. If that doesn't work take a letter opener and pull/pry them out w/ that."

Well, they do not "fall out" when titled back "in an angle" so I'm left to pull them through the small opening in the front and break them off a few at a time.

Huge design flaw.

I wish I'd saved the box. I would have returned this one if I could have.

Again, if you only need to use one size staple, this is great. I don't have the time to break off a strip of staples so it seems I'll be using 3/8" staples for a looooooong time now. Luckily those are pretty universal. But watch out.

One solution I thought of: In the future, I will break down the strips of staples into 5 or 10 staples only and load these into the stapler (even though this risks jamming). That way, staples can be switched by just stapling out the remaining couple of staples.

So if you do buy this, watch out. Unless you only plan to use one size of staple, just load a few staples in at a time and cross your fingers that it will not jam.

This stapler jams about every other use. I ordered this for use in an academic library and I have had to fix it just about every day. It's nearly impossible to get it to open up once it jams as well. Spend more money and get a better stapler.

4 out of 5 stars Great stapler, but learn from our mistakes!   October 16, 2009

Works really well for my husband's 20-plus paged appraisal reports. Great value compared to office supply store price of this product (we saved about $14 dollars). It takes up more room on his desk, however, but worth it. No more banging the heck out of the standard stapler, hoping the staples will go through his reports! Now for a hard lesson learned: DO NOT try using standard 1/4 inch staples in this stapler!!! There is NO warning on the box--just a small printed warning on the stapler that's easy to miss (obviously, we missed it--Doh!) It took many tools and a lot of patience to get the jammed staples out that we thought would work. Another lesson we learned the hard way: only use SWINGLINE brand staples. The office store brand staples that were cheaper did NOT work well at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great stapler - practical, durable & useful   October 11, 2009

Bought this stapler to use to make little pamphlets, booklets and lenghthy documents. As a supplement to using 3-prong binder-folders. As a sort of self-publishing for presentation purposes for work-related work. Very happy. Turns out the 3/8" staples are imminently practical. Just enough extra staple length to cover where a standard 1/4" staple is too short. Also bought the 1/2" staples too. Which are good for very thick documents. May eventually buy the 3/4" too. Good thing about this stapler is it is easily adaptable to the different staple sizes. Changing the staples is not difficult either. Also uses Swingline staples. So not much chance of stapler turning into an orphan if there is anything brand specific about the staples. Plus the price! Went to the major office supply stores and saw the same stapler priced at the MSRP. So very happy about the deal. Have a stapler for life that I am very happy with.
